Hernia Surgery FAQs

Want to know more about hernia surgery?

Dr. Benjamin Gulbrand of Hendricks Surgical Associates provides answers to some common questions.

Do all hernias require surgery?

Not always. Some small or minimally symptomatic hernias can be observed safely. We’ll discuss your specific risks and preferences.

What are the benefits of robotic hernia repair?

Robotic platforms can offer improved visualization and instrument dexterity for complex anatomy, which may translate to smaller incisions and a more comfortable recovery.

How long is recovery?

Recovery varies by hernia size and technique. Many patients return to light activity within days and resume normal routines in a few weeks. We’ll personalize guidance for your job and hobbies.

Will I need mesh?

Mesh can decrease recurrence in many ventral hernias. I’ll review options (including no‑mesh repairs when suitable) and select the safest, most durable plan with you.

Can prior surgeries or recurrences still be treated minimally invasively?

Often yes. Robotic/retromuscular techniques can be excellent for complex or recurrent hernias. Imaging and exam help determine candidacy.
