Hendricks Regional Health has again attained Magnet® recognition as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
This voluntary credentialing program for hospitals recognizes excellence in nursing; Magnet status is the highest designation an organization can receive for professional nursing practice.
“Magnet redesignation is a tremendous achievement for Hendricks Regional Health,” says Yvonne Culpepper, Vice President of Nursing/Chief Operating Officer. “Our redesignation recognizes the unrelenting, exceptional work our nurses do each day to improve outcomes for our patients and exceed their expectations for nursing care. As with our first Magnet recognition, this redesignation reflects the commitment of our entire hospital staff to work together as a team. Collectively, we provide the highest quality care possible for the people of our community. We are proud to be one of only 15 hospitals in the state of Indiana to achieve Magnet status.”
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes extensive on-site interviews and review of nursing services.
Hendricks Regional Health was the first organization in the United States to be reviewed under a new set of standards by the Commission on Magnet. The commission determined that Hendricks Regional Health was an exemplary organization that excelled in six particular areas:
1) Evidence of clinical nurse advocacy – the commission was impressed by the use of iPads in the hospital’s special care nursery to keep families connected when they cannot physically be together.
2) Community outreach – Hendricks Regional Health’s Partners in Care clinic has helped provide prenatal care to the underprivileged and has reduced complications for newborns, as well as providing family practice services to patients of all ages. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program has specially trained nurses on call to the emergency department that work closely with the prosecutor’s office to support and gather evidence for rape patients.
3) Nurse satisfaction scores at Hendricks Regional Health exceed Magnet® standards
4) Demonstrated autonomy in making care decisions – the commission was impressed by the efforts to reduce post-operative nausea in the endoscopy area; the Center for Diabetes Excellence and positive impact on patients of all ages; the use of certified wellness coaches in the Wellness department.
5) Nursing indicators – quality indicators at Hendricks Regional Health outperform national benchmarks in all measured areas.
6) Nursing Research Program – Hendricks Regional Health has a robust research program where nurses conduct research, host poster fairs and publish articles to share their findings.
ANCC is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. Just over six percent of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet status. A Magnet designation is valid for four years.
