Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. There is no radiation used in an MRI test. MRI is often used to diagnose problems with the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord).

All MRI scanners at Hendricks Regional Health are wide-bore systems, offering several advantages over traditional MRI machines. Wide-bore MRI scanners provide more space from side to side, as well as above the head, helping patients feel more comfortable during their exam. Because these systems have a larger opening and a shorter bore, many procedures can be performed with the patient's head outside of the machine.
Another benefit of wide-bore MRI technology is its quieter operation compared to traditional MRI scanners. The reduced noise level can create a more comfortable experience for patients. In many cases, patients may also have a loved one remain in the room during the exam, an option many find reassuring and comforting.
