A Women's Guide to Staying Healthy at Every Age

Here are some important steps to promoting lifelong good health for all women. Be sure to talk with your doctor to build your complete, personalized road map to good health. Also, you can learn more in our online women’s health library.
Get annual physical exams. During your physical you can expect an overall evaluation of your heart, lungs, muscle reflexes and blood pressure. Your doctor may order preventative screenings or recommend adult vaccinations that can help head-off serious illness. Annual pelvic and breast exams are also recommended for women over 21.

Perform self-breast exams regularly. If you are not sure how to do a self-exam, ask your doctor. If it’s time for your mammogram, request one online. Having your mammogram at our Women’s Center will give you the piece of mind that comes from choosing an accredited breast center.

Protect your bones. Young women can decrease their future osteoporosis with regular weight-bearing exercise and by getting enough calcium and vitamin D, which are crucial for good bone health. If you are 65 or have certain risk factors, your doctor may also recommend a bone density test.

Make healthy choices to lower your risk of a chronic condition such as heart disease – the number one killer of women. Focus on moving more and making fresh fruits and vegetables the basis of your diet. Our low-cost fitness classes and free nutrition programs at the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA can help.

Lynne's Story

After a recent knee injury, as part of my diagnostic process, I was told I needed an MRI. I went to the radiology department at Hendricks Regional Health Plainfield for my test.

I was somewhat anxious about this experience. From the kind reception folks at the desk to the checkout person at the end of the test, I was treated with the greatest kindness and patience.

I especially wanted to speak about the technician who completed my test. Cindy H. was awesome. She provided me with education about what to expect, encouragement about how I would do, and was patient with my slow movement. She made the whole experience less of a trauma and more of a learning opportunity … and before I knew it, the test was completed!

Thank you to her and the whole staff at that facility.
