Augmented Soft Tissue Manipulation (ASTYM)
Augmented Soft Tissue Manipulation (ASTYM) is a specialized rehabilitation approach that stimulates healing. It is especially beneficial to patients with tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains, strains, plantar fasciitis and other soft tissue injuries.
ASTYM was designed on the principles of deep tissue massage. Therapists use specially designed instruments to place pressure along your body to stimulate a healing response. The treatment helps the body send new collagen to the injured area, replacing scarred tissue with healthy tissue. ASTYM works by targeting the scarring or inflammation of those soft tissue areas and helping the body heal.
ASTYM is a non-invasive therapy technique that can achieve results quickly. If your individualized therapy plan includes this approach, you will be encouraged to continue normal activities. Treatment usually takes four to six weeks.
Sometimes ASTYM is used with other therapy techniques, and it is useful as both a first-choice or last resort treatment. It is effective because it focuses on the source of the soft tissue problem, not just the symptoms.
As the patient begins to heal, our staff develops a customized exercise program to encourage optimal healing of the soft tissue.
