Motorcycle Ride Benefits Foundation, Sheriff’s Department

Motorcycle enthusiasts can register now to participate in a unique police-escorted charity motorcycle ride. Hendricks Regional Health Foundation and the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department will host the Ride for Health & Heroes on Sunday, September 7. Ride proceeds support the healing power of play with construction of a new playground at the Danville hospital and the Sheriff Department’s K-9 Unit.

According to event committee chair and Hendricks County Sheriff Chief Deputy Steve Wagner, “We plan to bring four K-9 Unit dogs to this event for a demonstration before riders depart. The dogs and their handlers provide a key component to the fight against crime, especially the widespread distribution of narcotics. These dogs are specially trained for patrol work including searches, criminal apprehension and officer protection as well as narcotic detection. It’s an amazing demonstration everyone will enjoy.”

Foundation board chair Joe Neher added, “The well-planned route includes a drive around the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Ours is the only ride that allows civilians access to this special training course for law enforcement officers.

“This is the third year for this ride, and we’ve had very positive feedback and great attendance the past two years. Riders like the police escorts, and the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department has been a great partner with us. We hope to have even more riders, sponsors, and vendors this year.”

Registration is $30 for drivers and $10 for passengers and includes lunch following the ride. Online registration is available at SupportHendricks.org/ride. Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged. The event will be held, rain or shine, with safety of participants of primary concern.

The ride begins and ends at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Riders depart at 11:00 a.m. and return to the fairgrounds to enjoy lunch, a popular 50/50 raffle and other prize drawings. A DJ, courtesy of Senior Helpers, will provide music. Commemorative t-shirts will be available for purchase. Because of insurance requirements, all participants, including passengers, must be 16 years of age or older and must sign a release waiver at registration the day of the event. The Hendricks County Fairgrounds is a smoke-free venue.

Neher continued, “We hope this event will attract riders to support two wonderful causes – the indispensable work of Hendricks Regional Health and those who serve and protect from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department. As a motorcycle rider myself, I’m proud to be part of this fun event.”
