2011 Annual Report

2011 Annual Report

Hendricks Regional Health saw significant projects come to fruition in 2011 with the conclusion of a long-awaited community endeavor and a variety of patient care programs that improved safety and quality.

2011 Highlights
New Facilities
The much-anticipated Hendricks Regional Health YMCA opened in Avon in June. This collaborative effort with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis brought about the development of a shared facility and positive attention for Hendricks Regional Health. Volumes at the facility have grown faster than expected.

Hendricks Regional Health also began offering services on a part-time basis in Bainbridge in 2011. Neurology and nephrology services became available at that location one day per week. Recruiting efforts still continued throughout the year to obtain a full-time family practice physician for the facility.

Improving Patient Care
Fall Prevention
Fall prevention is a goal at every hospital and during 2011 Hendricks Regional Health built on previous efforts to eliminate patient falls. Throughout the hospital, bright yellow flags, bracelets and blankets have been used to designate patients who are a fall risk. This past year, signage and education for patient families was added to encourage patients to use the call light when they need to get out of bed. The “Call to Stop a Fall” efforts help patients understand that they aren’t “bothering” their caregiver by calling for help.

Re-engineered Discharge

Hendricks Regional Health joined a national movement initiated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services called Partnerships for Patients to prevent re-admissions and promote successful recovery. A multidisciplinary process beginning at admission, and following the patient through hospitalization, ends with the hospital helping to schedule follow-up appointments with the patient’s physician after hospital discharge. A post-discharge follow-up call is also made to ensure the patient is on the right track.

Electronic Medical Records

More than 100 associates were immersed in planning and implementing a new electronic medical records system for the hospital, scheduled to go live in early 2012. The new system will mark the first major revamp in hospital patient records in more than two decades and is projected to improve patient safety and efficiencies.

SimMan 3G

A high fidelity simulator, called SimMan 3 G, was added to the hospital’s education tools for training staff, first responders in the community and outside healthcare agencies. Simulated scenarios include rapid response, emergency cardiac and respiratory assessment, trauma and more. SimMan 3G is a life-like simulator that can talk, cry, bleed, sweat, blink, convulse and go into cardiac arrest, among other real-life responses. A total of $70,000 was donated from four generous contributors that made the purchase of SimMan 3G possible: Indiana District 5 Emergency Preparedness Region, Hendricks Regional Health Guild, Hendricks Regional Health Foundation and Duke Energy.

Sleep Apnea Risk Assessment

Undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can aggravate medical issues like hypertension and cardiac disease and increase a person's risk for certain medical conditions, such as stroke and heart attack. Hendricks Regional Health began using a two-part sleep assessment tool in 2011 on all non-pregnant adult hospital patients. If a patient has a positive screening result, nursing implements specific standards of care and notifies the Sleep Disorders Center staff to perform further assessments.

LSVT® LOUD

The speech therapy department introduced an innovative new therapy called LSVT® LOUD. The treatment is successful in improving voice and speech in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. Patients battling Parkinson’s are often stripped of the ability to effectively communicate with others, diminishing their personal, work and overall quality of life. Hendricks Regional Health was the only facility in Hendricks County to offer this service to patients.

Cancer Resource Center Opens

The American Cancer Society partnered with Hendricks Regional Health to open a new Cancer Resource Center and Library at the hospital. The resource center is available to cancer patients, their families, hospital staff and the general public. The Cancer Resource Center at Hendricks Regional Health was one of only four centers open at hospitals in central Indiana.

Women’s Center Receives Grants

The Women’s Center was granted more than $56,000 for support of breast health services for low-income, uninsured or under-insured women. The grants came from the Central Indiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust. Funds from the grants became available to qualifying patients in early 2011.

Blog Community Debuts

The Hendricks Regional Health Blog Community debuted in 2011 as a resource for nutrition, fitness, healthy outlooks, family, healthcare news and more. Hospital associates and physicians serve as regular bloggers while community members contribute as guest bloggers. The blog community provides the hospital with an opportunity to interact with community members and share information and health tips.

Hendricks Regional Health announced a partnership with St. Vincent Bariatric Center of Excellence to offer pre-and post-operative bariatric surgery services in Hendricks County. The partnership will provide a better continuity of care for bariatric patients from Hendricks and surrounding counties who want to receive bariatric care closer to home.

Heart Scans

A $49 Heart Scan became available to the Hendricks County community in 2011. Hendricks Regional Health offers the scan to help determine a person’s risk for heart attack, as it checks for signs of coronary artery disease by detecting calcium in plaque build-up in the arteries. The potentially life-saving scan takes about 15-20 minutes.
